Find Steed 5e: Mount Forms, Combat, and Shared Spells
I’ve always liked Find Steed because it gives a paladin more than a rented horse: it creates a loyal supernatural companion with a lasting bond. The spell is also unusually rules-dense, especially once mounted combat, shared spells, and the steed’s own statistics enter the picture.

How Find Steed Works in 2014 D&D 5e
After 10 minutes of casting, a spirit appears in an unoccupied space within 30 feet. You choose for it to be a Celestial, Fey, or Fiend, and it assumes one of the spell’s listed animal forms. The creature is unusually loyal and intelligent, understands one language you speak, and serves as your mount both in and out of combat.
The duration is Instantaneous, so there is no spell effect to concentrate on or dispel after the steed appears. The steed remains until it drops to 0 hit points, you dismiss it as an action, or you release it from the bond.
If the steed disappears, casting Find Steed again can summon the same spirit at its hit point maximum. You can have only one steed bonded by this spell at a time.
Choosing a Warhorse, Pony, Camel, Elk, or Mastiff
The 2014 spell offers five standard forms. The steed uses the chosen animal’s statistics except for the creature-type and Intelligence changes made by the spell.
| Form | Size | AC | Hit Points | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warhorse | Large | 11 | 19 | 60 feet |
| Pony | Medium | 10 | 11 | 40 feet |
| Camel | Large | 9 | 15 | 50 feet |
| Elk | Large | 10 | 13 | 50 feet |
| Mastiff | Medium | 12 | 5 | 40 feet |
If the chosen creature normally has Intelligence 5 or lower, Find Steed raises it to 6. The Dungeon Master may permit a different animal form, but the spell does not provide rules for choosing any creature automatically. An alternate form is therefore permission from the DM, not an unrestricted search through monster statistics.
Size matters when riding. A mount normally must be at least one size larger than its rider and have suitable anatomy, so a Medium pony or mastiff is not a normal mount for a Medium paladin. Those forms can still suit Small riders or other situations.
How Does the Steed Act in Combat?
Find Steed says the creature serves you as a mount, but the 2014 mounted-combat rules still determine how it acts while ridden. When you control a mount, its initiative changes to match yours, it moves as you direct, and it can take only the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action.
An independent mount keeps its own place in initiative and can take the actions in its stat block, but the Dungeon Master determines how an independent creature behaves. The spell’s loyalty, shared language, and telepathic bond are strong reasons for cooperation; they do not erase the mounted-combat rules or give the rider an extra unrestricted turn.
Telepathy and the Steed’s Language
You and the steed can communicate telepathically while you are within 1 mile of each other. The spell describes communication in both directions, allowing the steed to report what it perceives rather than merely receive commands.
The bond does not grant the steed special senses, unlimited knowledge, or the ability to see through your eyes. It communicates using what it can understand and perceive with its own statistics. Beyond 1 mile, the telepathic connection does not function, though the bond itself remains.
Which Spells Can You Share with Find Steed?
While mounted, you can choose to have a spell you cast that targets only you also target your steed. Both requirements matter: you must be mounted when you cast the spell, and the spell must target only you.
A self-range spell is not automatically eligible if it also targets another creature or an area. Likewise, a spell cast before mounting is not copied onto the steed later. The shared casting does not require a second spell slot, but each target remains subject to the spell’s normal effects and ending rules.
Whether a particular spell targets only the caster is determined by that spell’s text, not merely by the word “Self” in its range entry. When the targeting is ambiguous, the DM must interpret the specific spell.
Can Find Steed Be Upcast?
The 2014 spell has no higher-level benefit. A higher-level slot does not improve the animal’s statistics, unlock a flying form, or create additional steeds. The spell is also not a ritual, so its 10-minute casting time does not avoid the spell-slot cost.
Find Steed: 2014 vs. 2024 Rules
The 2024 spell substantially redesigns the steed:
- Casting takes an action instead of 10 minutes.
- Every steed uses a dedicated Otherworldly Steed stat block rather than an ordinary animal stat block.
- Its AC, hit points, Hit Dice, attack damage, and other features scale with the spell slot used.
- A slot of level 4 or higher gives the steed a 60-foot Fly Speed.
- The steed shares your initiative count and explicitly functions as a controlled mount while ridden.
- The new Life Bond feature can heal the nearby steed when you regain hit points from a level 1 or higher spell.
- The 2014 rule that copies self-only spells onto the mounted steed is removed.
The 2014 animal choices, shared-spell benefit, and 10-minute casting time in the main guide do not apply to the redesigned 2024 version.
Find Steed FAQ
Is Find Steed permanent?
It has an Instantaneous duration and no fixed expiration. The bond lasts until the steed disappears or you release it; the creature can remain through rests and between adventures.
Can Find Steed summon a flying mount in 2014 rules?
Not by default. None of the five listed forms can fly. A different form needs DM permission, and Find Greater Steed is the later spell designed around more powerful mounts.
Can another character ride your steed?
The spell does not forbid another suitable creature from riding it. The steed’s special bond, telepathy, and shared-spell rule remain tied to the caster.
Does Dispel Magic remove a 2014 Find Steed?
No. Find Steed is Instantaneous; after the summoning resolves, there is no ongoing spell duration for Dispel Magic to end.
