Generate a D&D NPC you can play right away
Choose Generate NPC for a name, ancestry, role, first impression, appearance, mannerism, motivation, secret, and adventure hook. Leave the generator options open for a surprise, or narrow the choices to fit your scene. A harbor inspector can be friendly, guarded, or unfriendly; ancestry does not determine temperament or profession.
Setting for the hook changes the places that appear in the adventure hook. For example, a coastal hook might send the party to an empty boathouse, while a wilderness hook might involve a flooded ford. Choose a role that makes sense for your story, or edit it after rolling.
Keep the details you like
- Reroll beside a detail changes that part of the card. If you reroll ancestry alone, the name stays the same until you reroll or edit it.
- Lock protects a detail from both individual rerolls and a new roll. The next full roll follows your selected options for unlocked details. Use Unlock all when you want a fresh start.
- Edit NPC opens the whole card. Click a detail to open the editor with that field focused. Add campaign notes, change a name, or leave optional fields blank.
- Copy text gives you a plain-text card to paste into session notes. It includes the secret, hook, and any DM notes you entered.
Turn a random character into a useful encounter
Pick one visible detail to introduce and one thing the character wants. Let the players decide whether to help, bargain, or move on. Keep the secret in reserve until the conversation, investigation, or stakes make it relevant. If the generated hook points in a different direction than the motivation, edit one or use the tension as a reason the character needs help.
For example, a guarded bookbinder might want to clear a friend’s name and carry a copy of a lost ledger. Let the party notice the bookbinder checking the door before sharing that information. The hook can give them a practical choice: meet a witness at the mill, ask who else saw the ledger, or protect the bookbinder while they come forward.
Use the session prep planner to record important NPCs alongside scenes and clues. The social encounters guide offers ways to build meaningful choices around a character’s motives. For ready-to-run situations, browse the encounter collections.
Save and back up your NPC roster
Save to roster keeps a character when you generate another. Search saved NPCs by name, role, or other details, and mark the ones you want to find quickly as favorites. Open brings a saved NPC into the editor area. After changing it, use Save changes to update its roster entry. The current card also saves in this browser, so you can reload and continue working on it.
Keep up to 100 saved NPCs. Use Export to download a JSON backup of the current card, roster, options, and locks. Import reads the file locally and confirms before replacing your data. A malformed or incompatible backup shows an error and leaves your roster intact. Undo can recover recent edits, rolls, removals, and imports during the current visit.
Frequently asked questions
Does this generate NPC stat blocks?
No. It creates character details and story prompts for DMs. Choose any creature statistics, checks, or game rules you need for your table. The results work as story material in both 2014 and 2024 D&D.
Where are my characters saved?
Your current NPC and saved roster stay in this browser on this device. The generator does not upload them or synchronize them across devices. Clearing browser data or switching browsers can remove access to the save. Export a backup for anything you want to keep. Ordinary site delivery and analytics still apply as described in the privacy policy.
Can I move my roster to another device?
Export the backup, transfer the downloaded file yourself, and import it in the other browser. Import replaces the existing roster after confirmation. Export both libraries first if you need to keep separate copies.
Is the NPC generator free?
Yes. Enable JavaScript and use it in your browser. No account, subscription, or installation is required.
