Animal Friendship 5e: Beast Targets, Charm, and Limits

Last Update:October 8, 2026

I’ve always enjoyed spells that solve an encounter by changing its tone rather than winning a fight, and Animal Friendship offers exactly that chance. A hostile or frightened beast may decide that the caster means no harm, opening the door to a peaceful solution. The spell is not animal control, though, and its target restrictions are as important as its charm.

How Does Animal Friendship Work in 5e?

The caster chooses one Beast they can see within 30 feet. The Beast must also be able to see and hear the caster. If its Intelligence score is 4 or higher, the spell fails automatically. Otherwise, it makes a Wisdom saving throw.

On a failed save, the Beast is charmed by the caster for 24 hours. On a successful save, nothing happens. If the caster or one of the caster’s companions harms the target, the spell ends early.

The spell requires no concentration. Its morsel of food is a material component, but the spell does not say that the food is consumed.

The target can be hostile when the spell is cast. Hostility does not grant immunity or advantage on the save, although the Beast still must see and hear the caster. On a failed save, the charmed condition immediately stops the Beast from attacking the caster; it does not necessarily stop the Beast from attacking the caster’s companions.

Does Animal Friendship Control the Beast?

The 2014 charmed condition prevents the Beast from attacking the caster or targeting the caster with harmful abilities or magical effects. The caster also has advantage on ability checks made to interact socially with the Beast.

Animal Friendship does not make the Beast a companion, issue commands, grant telepathy, or let the caster control its movement and actions. It also does not automatically make the Beast friendly toward the caster’s allies. What a charmed animal is willing and able to do beyond the condition depends on the situation, communication, and the DM’s adjudication.

The spell does not teach the Beast a language. Advantage on a social ability check is useful only when a check and some meaningful form of interaction are possible. Food, calm body language, Animal Handling, or a separate way to communicate may help turn the magical opening into cooperation, but none of those outcomes is automatic.

What Creatures Can Animal Friendship Target?

The target must have the Beast creature type. A creature that resembles an animal but has another type—such as a Monstrosity, Fey, or Dragon—is not a valid target under the 2014 spell.

The target’s Intelligence must be 3 or lower. If its Intelligence is 4 or higher, the spell fails before a saving throw is resolved. The spell does not reveal the creature’s type or Intelligence score, so the caster may not know in advance whether a strange animal-like creature qualifies.

The Beast must see and hear the caster when the spell is cast. Being blinded, deafened, or fully unable to perceive the caster can therefore prevent the spell from working even when the target is otherwise valid.

This makes creature type more important than appearance. A wolf, brown bear, or giant eagle is a Beast, while an owlbear is a Monstrosity and a pseudodragon is a Dragon. The spell also cannot target a Beast with Intelligence 4 or more, even if the creature is otherwise friendly and willing.

What Ends Animal Friendship Early?

The charm lasts for 24 hours without concentration unless the caster or one of the caster’s companions harms the Beast. The spell does not define harm as only hit point damage, so deliberately subjecting the target to another injurious effect can reasonably end it even if no attack roll was involved.

Harm from an unrelated creature does not satisfy that clause. The spell also does not end merely because the Beast moves beyond 30 feet; range matters when the spell is cast, not throughout its duration.

Casting at Higher Levels

Using a slot above 1st level adds one Beast target for each additional slot level. Every target must be within range and meet all the normal requirements, and each one makes its own Wisdom saving throw.

Spell slot Maximum targets
1st 1 Beast
2nd 2 Beasts
3rd 3 Beasts
4th 4 Beasts

The duration and Intelligence restriction do not change when upcast.

Animal Friendship: 2014 vs. 2024 Rules

The 2024 spell keeps the same level, range, duration, components, classes, Wisdom save, and upcasting progression, but removes two important eligibility restrictions.

Rule 2014 version 2024 version
Intelligence Spell fails against a Beast with Intelligence 4 or higher No Intelligence limit
Perception requirement Beast must see and hear the caster Target only needs to be a visible Beast in range
Ending from harm Ends if caster or a companion harms the Beast Ends if caster or an ally deals damage to the Beast

This page’s main explanation follows the more restrictive 2014 spell.

Tactical Uses and Limitations

Animal Friendship is most useful when a Beast is acting from fear, territorial instinct, hunger, or training rather than an unchangeable goal. Advantage on social checks can help the caster calm or redirect it when communication is possible.

The spell does not bypass the need to communicate, and charm is not obedience. A Beast may simply stop attacking the caster, flee, protect its territory from someone else, or refuse a dangerous request. Harming it ends the spell, so a party seeking a peaceful outcome needs to act consistently.

FAQ

Does Animal Friendship control a Beast?

No. It applies the charmed condition but gives the caster no direct control or command ability.

Can it affect a familiar?

Only if the familiar actually has the Beast creature type. A familiar summoned by the 2014 Find Familiar spell is normally a Celestial, Fey, or Fiend.

Does the Beast know it was charmed?

The spell does not state that the target automatically knows. The DM determines what it understands from the circumstances.

Is the morsel of food consumed?

No consumption is specified, so it is not consumed by the spell.
