Barkskin 5e: Armor Class, Wild Shape, and 2024 Changes

I’ve always liked Barkskin as an unmistakably druidic defense: instead of strapping on metal armor, you wrap a willing creature in living protection. The 2014 version is easy to misread, however. It establishes an Armor Class minimum rather than a new base calculation, and keeping that protection active requires concentration.

How Does Barkskin Work in 2014 D&D 5e?

You touch one willing creature. For up to 1 hour, while you maintain concentration, the target’s skin looks rough and bark-like and its AC cannot be lower than 16.

That wording creates a floor. Calculate the target’s AC normally, including armor, Dexterity, a shield, and other applicable modifiers. If the result is 15 or lower, Barkskin makes it 16. If the result is already 17 or higher, use the higher result.

Does Barkskin Stack with a Shield or Other AC Bonuses?

Other effects still participate in the target’s normal AC calculation, but Barkskin is applied only after that calculation. A character whose ordinary AC is 12 does not reach AC 18 merely by carrying a shield while Barkskin is active; the shield raises the normal calculation to 14, and Barkskin then raises the final result to 16.

If a temporary modifier pushes the normal result above 16, the higher result applies. For example, a reaction that raises the target’s calculated AC from 14 to 19 produces AC 19 for that attack. When the modifier ends and the normal result falls below 16 again, Barkskin restores the minimum.

This also means Barkskin and Mage Armor do not combine into a new formula. Determine which AC calculation applies, include its valid modifiers, and then use Barkskin only if the result would be below 16.

Does Barkskin Work with Wild Shape?

Yes. A druid can cast Barkskin and then use Wild Shape. Transforming does not automatically end an existing spell, and the beast form benefits from the AC minimum while the spell lasts.

The druid must still maintain concentration. Damage taken in beast form can trigger concentration saving throws, and becoming incapacitated ends the spell. Barkskin is therefore most useful for a form whose normal AC is below 16, but it competes with every other concentration spell the druid might want to sustain.

Can Barkskin Be Upcast?

The 2014 spell has no higher-level benefit. A higher spell slot does not raise the AC minimum, add targets, extend the duration, or remove concentration. Casting it with a higher slot changes the spell’s level for rules that care about slot level, but it does not improve the protection described by the spell.

Barkskin: 2014 vs. 2024 Rules

The 2024 spell is substantially stronger and easier to use. It takes a bonus action instead of an action, lasts 1 hour without concentration, and raises the AC minimum from 16 to 17. The willing-creature touch range and handful of bark remain.

Those changes matter especially for druids using Wild Shape: the caster can apply Barkskin and transform on different bonus actions without reserving concentration for the entire hour. The quick-reference table and main rulings above remain based on the 2014 spell.
