Darkvision 5e: Range, Perception, and Magical Darkness

Last Update:October 11, 2026

I’ve always appreciated exploration spells that remove a practical obstacle without demanding concentration, and Darkvision is built for exactly that job. One touch grants a willing creature eight hours of sight in ordinary darkness, freeing the party from carrying a visible light source. It is useful, but it does not pierce every kind of obscurity or make darkness as clear as daylight.

How Does the Darkvision Spell Work in 5e?

The caster touches one willing creature. For the next 8 hours, that creature has darkvision to a range of 60 feet. The spell requires no concentration, so the caster can maintain another spell and does not risk losing Darkvision when taking damage.

Within that 60-foot range, the target treats dim light as bright light and darkness as dim light. It cannot discern color in darkness and sees only shades of gray there. The spell does not change normal sight in bright light.

The material component is either a pinch of dried carrot or an agate. It has no listed cost and is not consumed, so a component pouch or spellcasting focus can normally supply or replace it.

Can Darkvision See Through Magical Darkness?

Darkvision works in ordinary dim light and darkness. It does not see through solid cover, fog, smoke, blindness, invisibility, or other effects that block or remove sight unless another rule says otherwise.

It also does not pierce the magical darkness created by the Darkness spell, which explicitly prevents darkvision from seeing through its area. A feature must specifically say it works in magical darkness to overcome that restriction.

Seeing darkness as dim light still matters mechanically. A creature has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight in dim light, so Darkvision does not guarantee that the target notices hidden doors, traps, or creatures in total darkness.

Darkvision also does not remove disadvantage caused by other lightly obscured phenomena. Fog, foliage, smoke, and similar obstacles follow their own rules; turning darkness into dim light does not make those obstacles transparent.

Does the Spell Extend Existing Darkvision?

The spell says the target has darkvision out to 60 feet; it does not say that it adds 60 feet to an existing range. A creature with 30-foot darkvision can use the spell’s 60-foot range, but a creature that already sees 120 feet does not gain 180-foot darkvision.

Likewise, the spell grants only the ordinary darkvision sense. It does not add special traits a creature might possess, such as seeing through magical darkness or discerning color underground.

Because effects with the same name do not combine, casting Darkvision on the same target more than once does not extend its range or add the durations together.

This matters most for a creature whose natural range is shorter than 60 feet: the spell supplies the better 60-foot sense for its duration. It offers no benefit to a creature whose existing darkvision already reaches 60 feet or farther, unless another feature specifically interacts with having the spell.

Does Darkvision Remove Perception Penalties?

No. In complete mundane darkness, the spell lets the target see as though the area were dimly lit. Dim light is lightly obscured under the 2014 rules, which imposes disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. A torch may therefore reveal color and fine visual details more reliably even though it also advertises the party’s position.

Darkvision: 2014 vs. 2024 Rules

The 2024 version keeps the same level, casting time, touch range, eight-hour duration, lack of concentration, and core class list. Its granted range is substantially longer.

Rule 2014 version 2024 version
Darkvision range 60 feet 150 feet
Material component Dried carrot or an agate A dried carrot

The 2024 rules define the Darkvision sense in the rules glossary rather than repeating its full operation in this spell. This page uses the 2014 range and sight rules.

Tactical Uses and Limitations

An eight-hour duration can cover most of an adventuring day or a full period of underground exploration. Avoiding torches helps a group remain less visible at a distance, and the lack of concentration makes the spell easy to keep active during combat.

One casting affects only one willing creature, so preparing an entire party uses several 2nd-level slots. The 60-foot limit, grayscale vision, and disadvantage on sight-based Perception checks in darkness also mean that a light source may still reveal details Darkvision misses.

Casting at Higher Levels

Darkvision has no higher-level benefit. A higher slot does not add targets, extend the range, or increase the duration.

FAQ

Does Darkvision turn darkness into bright light?

No. It lets the target treat darkness as dim light, including disadvantage on sight-based Perception checks.

Does Darkvision see through the Darkness spell?

No. That spell specifically prevents darkvision from seeing through it.

Does the spell add 60 feet to existing darkvision?

No. It grants darkvision out to 60 feet rather than increasing an existing range by 60 feet.

Can Darkvision be dispelled?

Yes. It is an ongoing spell with an eight-hour duration and can be ended by Dispel Magic under that spell’s normal rules.
