Arcane Eye

Arcane Eye 5e: Scouting, Movement, and Limits

Last Update:October 13, 2026

I’ve always liked Arcane Eye because it turns exploration into a careful remote puzzle. The eye can travel far beyond the caster, peer in every direction, and slip through tiny openings, but every closed barrier and every minute spent scouting still matters.

How Does Arcane Eye Work in 2014 D&D 5e?

You create an invisible magical eye at a point within 30 feet. It hovers for up to 1 hour while you maintain concentration. You mentally receive visual information from it as though looking through the eye.

The eye has normal vision, can look in every direction, and has darkvision to 30 feet. That darkvision does not give it any special ability to see through magical darkness, fog, solid objects, or other effects that block sight.

The spell transmits only visual information. It does not say that the eye can hear, speak, manipulate an object, trigger a switch, or communicate with a creature it observes.

How Far Can Arcane Eye Travel?

The eye begins within 30 feet of the caster, but the 2014 spell sets no maximum distance after creation. As an action, the caster can move it up to 30 feet in any direction. It can travel miles away during the hour if the route remains open and the caster continues using actions to move it.

Distance does not break the mental visual feed, but the eye cannot enter another plane. The caster also remains wherever their body is, concentrating and spending actions while receiving the remote view.

What Can Block Arcane Eye?

A solid barrier stops the eye. It cannot pass through a wall, closed door, sealed chest, or intact pane merely because it is invisible or magical. It can move through an opening as small as 1 inch in diameter, which makes keyholes, wide cracks, grates, and gaps beneath doors valuable scouting routes when they are large enough.

The eye does not open doors for itself. If a route has no qualifying opening, someone else must create access or the eye must find another path.

Can Creatures Detect or Attack Arcane Eye?

The 2014 spell calls the eye invisible and magical but provides no Armor Class, hit points, creature type, or object statistics. It also gives no general rule for attacking or destroying it. Treating it as an ordinary invisible creature or object adds rules the spell does not supply.

Magic that detects magical effects may reveal that magic is nearby when its own requirements are met, but the exact interaction depends on that effect’s wording. An observed creature might also infer that it is being watched from events around it, even if it cannot see the eye itself.

Tactical Uses and Limitations

Arcane Eye excels at mapping junctions, checking rooms, counting defenders, and locating hazards before the party enters. Its all-direction vision makes it especially useful in branching spaces, while the one-inch opening rule can bypass many ordinary doors.

Its costs are concentration, a 4th-level slot, and the caster’s action whenever the eye moves. The eye cannot hear conversations, interact with discoveries, or carry light for companions. A route made entirely of sealed barriers can stop it immediately.

Arcane Eye: 2014 vs. 2024 Rules

The 2024 spell moves the eye with a bonus action instead of an action, making it much easier for the caster to do something else on the same turn. It also explicitly calls the eye invulnerable. Its level, initial range, concentration duration, 30-foot movement, all-direction sight, 30-foot darkvision, and one-inch opening remain.

The quick-reference table and the main explanations above use the 2014 spell.

FAQ

Can Arcane Eye pass through a keyhole?

Only if the opening is at least 1 inch in diameter. Many real keyholes are smaller, so the actual opening matters.

Can Arcane Eye move through glass?

It can see through transparent glass, but an intact pane is still a solid barrier and blocks the eye’s movement.

Does Arcane Eye have unlimited range?

After its initial placement within 30 feet, the 2014 eye has no maximum distance from the caster while it remains on the same plane.

Does Arcane Eye require concentration?

Yes. Losing concentration ends the spell and the remote view.
