Giant Spider 5e Guide: Webs, Vertical Space, and Recovery

Last Update:October 31, 2026

Rules baseline: 2014 D&D 5e, SRD 5.1. Use the giant spiders entry in the complete SRD for statistics and exact trait wording. The motives, layouts, bargains, and morale choices below are original DM suggestions.

An enormous brown spider waits among webs stretched across a limestone cave

A spider encounter works best when the players can read the web before they enter it. Show where silk is anchored, what hangs inside, and which paths remain clear. That gives the party a problem to solve rather than a surprise restraint with no warning.

What to emphasize

Use the creature’s printed Web, climbing, and web-related traits. Its web attack restrains a target; it does not automatically paralyze everyone in a decorated room. The bite’s poison has its own distinct consequences. Keep those effects separate and consult the linked stat block.

Place the spider somewhere its climbing matters, while keeping the scene understandable from the party’s viewpoint. A wall above a ledge is easier to run than an invisible maze of tunnels. Describe its route if it changes position.

Make the silk actionable

Pick a few anchors instead of treating every surface as equally webbed. Players might cut a connection, approach from a bare shelf, or recover an object without entering the densest silk.

Use the printed web defenses when attacking webbing created by its action. For environmental webs and rock fixtures, establish the relevant properties before the party spends resources. Fire can create a separate hazard around dry materials; explain the danger rather than springing a room-wide inferno on the first torch.

Avoid automatic surprise merely because the creature is above the party. Resolve detection and surprise normally. A party that finds the spider or protects its approach has earned a different opening.

Ready to run: the courier’s satchel

A giant spider watches a webbed courier satchel above a cave shelf and an unobstructed path

Situation: one giant spider has caught an unattended courier satchel in its web. The courier escaped earlier and needs the documents recovered; no living captive is hidden inside.

Layout: a 40-foot limestone chamber has a broad clear path along the south wall. The satchel hangs 10 feet above a low western shelf. The spider waits openly on the high northern wall. Three visible strands connect the satchel’s web to nearby rock.

Opening: lantern light catches the silk and the courier’s red shoulder strap. The spider shifts when a loose stone touches the web.

Choices: bypassing the web allows passage. A pole with a hook, careful work from the shelf, or suitable magic can recover the satchel. Decide how a proposed plan affects the strands and whether its noise or contact draws the spider before asking for a roll.

If combat begins: roll initiative. The spider uses its actual web and bite actions, defending the web but not pursuing travelers far down the clear southern passage. An ally can help a restrained character through the options the rules actually provide.

Finish: intact documents reveal the courier’s destination. A damaged satchel can still yield a readable clue. Easier: the spider retreats into a crack after being wounded. Harder: the party must recover fragile contents before taking a slower bypass, with that urgency explained in advance.

Prepare for your party

Use the encounter balancing guide before choosing numbers and positions. A creature’s challenge rating alone does not account for terrain, allies, or depleted resources. For more locations, browse environment encounters. Keep initiative and hit points visible during play, and return to Monster Guides for another creature.
